Sarah Helms
is 18 years old and has been involved with 4H since she was 9
years old. Her first livestock project was Market Lambs.
Then in 2000 her Fair (Kern County Fair) had its first Market
Goat show. She got a couple of wethers and jumped in just to see
what it was all about. She found out she loved feeding and
showing goats.
Sarah
began jackpotting in junior goat shows and in
(2003) Sarah was the state Champion Senior Goat Showman (17 to 21
years old) and Reserve Champion Overall in goat
placement points.
In
the last 4 years since she has been showing goats Sarah has
attended over 30 shows carrying from 2 to 6 goats at a time
(depending on the time in the season) to each show. So her show
ring experience is extensive. During that time she has had 3
Supreme Champions, 5 Grand Champions, 9 Division Champions and
numerous weight class winners
Sarah
says that the love of what you are doing, lots of hard work and
access to a goat herd that consistently offers you quality
wethers is a winning combination.
Looking back to where she first started and
realizing the things she has learned, she wants to pass on some
of those things to others who may be at the point she was when
she first started. Click to read her article, Raising
and Showing Market Wethers.
